DESCRIPTION

Corrosion and rust prevention is essential for metals used in environments where water, high humidity, mist and salt are factors. We provide three types of anti corrosive powder coating; barrier, sacrificial and inhibitive coatings. Barrier coatings are non-porous and protect metal surfaces from corrosion, sacrificial coatings provide a layer that corrodes in preference to the substrate and inhibitive coatings provide a thicker form of barrier protection (to over 800 microns) for applications operating in very aggressive and abrasive environments.

TYPES OF ANTI CORROSIVE POWDER COATING

 

Barrier Coatings

Barrier coatings form a protective non-porous layer over a substrate that prevents the surrounding environment from affecting the base metal. If a barrier coating is applied to the base metal without any other coating or film and is damaged by impact or chemical attack, the substrate is then unprotected. Film thickness and solid content significantly affect the lifespan of the protection.

 

Inhibitive coatings

Inhibitive porous coatings form a passive layer on a substrate that reacts with metal and humidity as it penetrates the film. The corrosion protection offered by inhibitive coatings significantly reduces over time and is why these coatings are regularly used in primers that are overcoated.

 

Sacrificial coatings

Sacrificial coatings act as an additive over a substrate which sacrificially corrodes to protect the material below. Unlike barrier coatings, sacrificial coatings remain effective if the film is damaged, however the level of protection offered is dependent on the additive content level and type of paint binder used.

TEST ANALYSIS

●Salt-Spray Test (ASTM B-117): A 5% sodium chloride solution is sprayed by means of a nozzle into a closed chamber to produce a static fog. The panels with an Andreas cross are suspended in this for a prescribed period of time, while the temperature is kept constant at 35 °C

●Controlled Humidity Test (ASTM D2247): Estimates the influence of moisture on corrosion. The samples are exposed to 100% relative humidity at 40 °C

●Filiform Corrosion Test (ASTM D2803): Scribed panels are placed in a corrosive atmosphere (salt spray for 4 to 24 hrs) or immersed in a salt solution and are exposed to humidity (25 °C and 85% relative humidity).

●Prohesion (ASTM G 85-A5): Scribed panels are placed in a weaker corrosive atmosphere alternative cycles at room temperature and at 35 °C.

●Electrochemical Tests like Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) on intact or scribed panels have the advantage of continuously recording the variation of resistance and capacity, and are able to relate with corrosion mechanism, but need a skilled person in order to fully understand the results. Further electrochemical test methods include Potentiodynamic polarization as well as others.
