DESCRIPTION

Today, the desire for sustainable and innovative products is greater than ever. This has driven many powder coating manufacturers to develop coatings for substrates never previously powder coated. New product applications for low temperature coatings and UV cured powder coating are being developed. These finishing materials are being used on heat sensitive substrates such as medium density fiberboard (MDF), plastics, composites and preassembled parts.

UV cured powder coating is a very durable coating, enabling innovative design and finishing possibilities and can be used on a vast array of substrates. One substrate commonly used with UV-cured powder coating is MDF. MDF is a readily available bi-product of the wood industry. It is easy to machine, is durable and used in a variety of furniture products at retail including point of purchase displays and fixtures, work surfaces, healthcare and office furniture. UV-cured powder coating finish performance can exceed that of plastic and vinyl laminates, liquid coatings and thermal powder coatings.

Many plastics can be finished with UV cured powder coating. However, UV powder coating plastic does require a pretreatment step to make an electrostatic conductive surface on plastic. To assure adhesion surface activation may also be required.

Pre-assembled components containing heat sensitive materials are being finished with UV-cured powder coatings. These products contain a number of different parts and materials including plastic, rubber seals, electronic components, gaskets and lubricating oils. These internal components and materials are not degraded or damaged because of UV-cured powder coatings exceptionally low process temperature and fast processing speed.

FEATURE

●Fast curing, higher line speeds and higher productivity can be achieved. For the coating of blanks, heavy metal parts, this can result in considerable energy and time savings.

●Metal parts can be combined with heat-sensitive parts. During the heating and curing phase, the heat-sensitive parts, such as plastic wires or rubber seals, are not damaged because of the lower temperature requirements of UV powder coatings.

●Earlier, the excellent protective properties of conventional thermosetting powder coatings on metal substrates were discussed. It is important to note that UV-curable powder coatings impart many of these same properties to protective films. Some important properties, such as adhesion, film flexibility, corrosion and weathering resistance, of Uvecoat 2000-based formulations on frequently used metallic substrates were studied. Results of this study are discussed later.

●Some limitations can be found when using UV curable technology, including the following.

●Curing of complex shapes/hidden parts can be problematic.

●Limitations may exist in the choice of colors curable by UV light. For instance, yellow pigments are known to interfere with the efficient curing of liquid UV curable formulations.

ADVANTAGES

●Low system costs

●Excellent coating properties

●High cure speed

●Low cure temperature

●Hardly any emission of volatile organic compounds

●Maximum powder use with overspray recycling

●Application of thicker coating layers (depending on pigmentation level)

●Application of one layer

CURING

The applied powder is cured in an installation that consists of two sections: the IR section (melting and flow) and the UV section (cure). The IR section is equipped with medium-wave IR lamps (600W). With a pyrometer coupled to the power supply of the IR section a good control of the melting temperature can be achieved.

In general, the H, D and V bulbs of an electrodeless Fusion F600 UV-lamp (240W/cm) are recommended for the UV section. The lamps can have a variable power supply. It is important that the lamps are suitable to cure the coating with an optimal result. Not only are the lamps of importance, but also the photoinitiators and the pigments. These must all be compatible to each other

For clear coatings an H-bulb (Hg-lamp) is used at 120W/cm which is 50% of the maximum power. For the white pigmented coatings, the V-bulb (Gallium lamp) which has longer wavelength radiation gives the best result. For a white coating the power used is 144W/cm (60% of the maximum power).
