Fluorocarbon Powder Coating

DESCRIPTION In an attempt to extend the liquid coating technology to powder coating, the powder coating industry developed Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based coatings as an alternative to the fluorocarbon powder coating. However, fluorocarbon powder coating had similar drawbacks to the liquid coatings. In addition to these drawbacks, it was difficult to melt these as they required higher heat to melt, they did not adhere to the surface as solidly as other powder coatings and they needed to be used with a primer. The gloss levels for these coatings were limited to around 30 gloss units and 60 degrees. This resulted in dull, low gloss surfaces. They also depended upon a multistep process, which gave rise to extra costs. In an attempt to overcome some of these drawbacks, fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) with functional groups attached to the backbone of the molecule has been developed. This resulted in significantly different coating as compared to the fluorocarbon powder coating. These coatings offer various benefits in relation to the PVDF coatings as they are harder, their processing temperatures are lower and last but not the least, its adhesion is better than PVDF. Polyester coatings can meet all the previous AAMA requirements, but fluorinated polymers are significantly better when it comes to UV resistance. After 300 hours, the polyesters had a remaining gloss of 50% or better whereas fluoropolymer coatings had an unchanged gloss even after 4000 hours. In architectural industry, the use of powder coating is not free of challenges. A few such challenges faced in certain applications of powder coating are explained below.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES ●Fluorocarbon powder coating is solid powder, completely free of any solvent, does not produce any organic waste gas and waste water during production and construction, not only meets environmental protection requirements, but also saves treatment costs such as waste gas and waste water; ●Different from the solvent-based fluorocarbon coating during construction, it can be directly used without mixing and can reduce labor costs; ●Compared with solvent-type fluorocarbon coatings, the electricity consumption is low during construction, which can save costs; ●It only needs once coating, the process is convenient to operate without the need of adding production equipment; ●The construction process can adopt not only horizontal spraying but also vertical spraying, which can reduce more costs with vertical spraying; ●Fluorocarbon powder coatings have many problems and defects due to metallic color, and it is temporarily unable to replace solvent-based metallic fluorocarbon coating.
