DESCRIPTION

The present invention relates to a powder coating composition for low temperature cure which comprises a mixture of a carboxylic acid group containing first polyester; at least one of a second polyester having a glass transition temperature ≦45° C. and/or a crystalline polycarboxylic acid; a glycidyl group containing acrylic copolymer; a further compound and/or resin having functional groups readable with the carboxylic acid groups; and a thermosetting curing catalyst. This thermosetting low temperature curing powder coating is designed for coating heat-sensitive substrates such as wood, fiber board and other materials which cannot withstand the excessive heat/time conditions necessary to cure traditional coatings. Low temperature curing powder coating, when cured at temperatures below 150° C., produce a finish which exhibits a high gloss, smooth surface along with an outstanding hardness and weatherability.

Low temperature curing powder coating, including candidate representative of all the major coating chemistries, was evaluated. Nearly all failed to adequately react at a cure schedule of 120°C for 30 min, and none, even when prepared at their manufacturer’s lowest recommended cure conditions, met the stringent performance needs for temperature-sensitive military applications. Initial research is presented toward developing low temperature cure powder coatings that simultaneously meet all performance requirements at this target cure schedule. Using commercial resins, corrosion inhibitors, and catalysts, this research effort has closed gaps in low temperature cure coating performance and has helped to identify critical deficiencies. This study establishes direction for future developments in new resin and catalyst technologies.
